Fairphone brings its second Smartphone on the market, which should be made available for a fairer deal with people and resources. We watched the module telephone Fairphone 2 in the test under the hood.
The approach is really promising and sprays of idealism. There the Smartphone industry that exploits the planet and its inhabitants without regard, here the small Dutch company Fairphone that at least attempts to produce a Smartphone with some sustainable values and also published a transparent breakdown of expenses for his phone. Clear case that we take the latest generation of self-styled eco phone in the test more closely scrutinized.
No beauty prize
Fairphone gets whopping 520 euro for his latest product – so it costs about 200 euros more than its predecessor, and hardly less than a Samsung Galaxy S7. But what awaits the buyer when he opens the fancy packaging, once disappointing despite the high price. The Fairphone 2 may baste the dubious title of currently ugliest smartphones on the plastic lapel is our opinion.
This is ensured by especially the unattractive, boring styled back cover that in the colors of blue, black or available in a transparent version, but can convince either optically or haptically. The actually quite slim unit is chubby and hard packed – the construction height is 12 mm in the maximum, the scale will display a whopping 173 grams weight.
Rubber edge protects against falls
On the other hand, the rubber edge of the already very stable plastic housing attached to the back cover is clever. This wraps the pages vulnerable to a fall of 5-inch full-HD displays and supports also the protective function of the Gorilla glass 3-cover in addition at its most vulnerable points. Since Fairphone defines “Sustainability” also about a possible long period of use of smartphones, this is certainly a good approach.
A unique feature is the modular design of the Fairphone 2, consisting of seven main elements with display, battery, back cover and core -, camera -, bottom – and top module. You can buy after all of them individually in the spare parts shop by Fairphone. What breaks so that you can easily replace the corresponding module.
Have we of course immediately tried in the test – and were enthusiastic, as simply an exchange of components is to be accomplished. To move around the screen, it is sufficient to remove the back cover, solve two blue latches at the bottom of the device, remove the display from the body and put on the new. Do-it-yourself costs: the display unit costs in the spare parts shop by Fairphone just 84,29 euro plus shipping. To remove the remaining elements of the phone, you need only a screwdriver – the Fairphone 2 is completely divided by a technique lay in a few minutes. Another advantage of the modular design: Thus a Smartphone would make future-proof. So, mobile radio fans as the camera module or the display unit could replace with better versions. This is still not an issue – in the shop, but what is not known still can be.
Oldie but Goldie
Technically, Fairphone relies on a somewhat elderly, but performance Qualcomm platform with the name MSM8974AB. Its quad-core CPU can await you with a clock rate of up to 2.3 GHz and 2 GB of memory. The freely available user memory contains lush 24.5 GB. Even when the connection standards, the Fairphone 2 white with LTE cat 4 Please fast ac Wi-FI and dual SIM capability. Unfortunately, this does not apply for the old version of Android-5.1. About the Fairphone OS version 1.5.1 was placed, which is equivalent to up to a few features of the native UI of Android.
The remaining facilities is also quickly checked with an FM radio and an own key for the 8-megapixel camera. The latter is unfortunately a sad chapter, because even in good light conditions, no good shots get us in the test. About Selfies you need worry to make given the 2-megapixel camera on the front.
The endurance values measured in our laboratory are, however, in the green area, also the acoustics and the reception for UMTS and LTE. The GSM reception is rather weak and could yet in the rural area and back problems.
In sum, the Fairphone 2 reached the verbal note “good” in the test. Technically, the Smartphone is however outdated. But those who would like to support the praiseworthy commitment of Fairphone and looking for a sturdy phone with character, the will here find it.
