HTC One A9 in the Test

The crisis-hit Smartphone pioneer HTC seeks support from Apple and takes his first real iPhone clone in the trade with the one A9. Can it go well? We have tested the HTC one A9.

After the presentation of the A9 mid October HTC had to endure a lot of derision about themselves. Not a few observers were surprised that precisely a thus traditional phone manufacturers like HTC so brazenly by Apple decoupled. The similarities are striking in fact: you will find the display glass and rounded at the edges, the protruding camera lens and the aluminum unibody by plastic strips as well at the iPhone 6 (test).

You can find this naughty or is boring, undisputed but that the mere 7.26 mm thin Smartphone makes an extremely chic impression. A first-class workmanship and haptics is practically one of HTC’s DNA, but the one A9 is undoubtedly the masterpiece of Taiwanese people. It feels at least as good as the original from Apple and is 140 grams on top very easily in the hand.

Fast and modern

The display is top. HTC remains at the handy 5-inch format, but opts for an OLED, which convinces with a high viewing angle stability, rich colors and strong contrasts. The resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels provides a sharp representation, the light intensity is very high with 401 candela for an OLED.

The fingerprint sensor on the display is also great: there is no button to push, but a sensor surface, on which the thumb must be connected only slightly. The release succeeds in smoothly, it is striking how quickly the display is activated and is ready to go – a testament to the strong performance of the system. Where is the used Snapdragon 617 “only” a middle-class SoC by Qualcomm, whose performance behind the 800 series is located, what clearly attested by benchmarks.

A memory of 2 GB RAM is not state of the art in the Android world, other 500-euro smartphones come with 3 GB. But it is crucial in the end, what makes HTC. And there’s no reason for the complaints: the system reacts always liquid, we have no objection to trailer or drop-outs. Even graphics-intensive games like Temple run run smoothly.

Place enough exists on the one A9, because less than 10 GB available, which can extend even once clever are the user memory 16 GB: because the Smartphone with the latest Android Version Marshmallow is running, you can add an inserted micro SD card to internal memory.

Camera RAW option

The 13-megapixel camera offers a good image quality, the distance to the Oberliga to the iPhone 6 s and is Samsung’s S6 models but felt, although HTC incorporates an optical image stabilizer of the latest generation. When it gets dark, noise is evident much earlier, also tend to the blooming bright image areas with a high contrast range.

A new professional mode can save a failed recording but sometimes still. It allows the storage of the photos in the RAW format, which contains many image information that is lost when the usual JPEG compression. The raw data you can either continue editing on the computer or on the Smartphone directly after recording an automatic optimisation run, which gives good results in most cases, takes some time – one must reckon with ten seconds per photo.

The bad premonitions, which come with views of the low battery capacity of 2150 mAh to be confirmed by the test lab. With a maturity of less than five hours in the connect-use mix, the one A9 belongs to the kurzatmigsten Smartphones that we have ever measured at the price of 500 euro, it is even by far last. With this model, you get with heavy use don’t have the day.

Reception: A question of the system operator

And what about the reception? Depends on: A low radiation capacity ensures a poor result in the GSM network. That is how our network test shows while still little used, but is still an important alternative for poor coverage. The results are not intoxicating in the UMTS operating. In the modern LTE network, feels the A9, however, and sparks stable. So, with the correct operator, you can have fun with the noble Apple clone.
