Sony Xperia (J) Test

Price vs. features is always a balance regardless of phone. With Xperia Sony J has drawn down on one part and focus on other things.

Sony’s Xperia series and its single-letter to the name’s getting right confused now. If we are expecting the Xperia phones in recent years that had a “real” name, as Miro, Neo, Go and so on have Sony to date a review out phones to 15 of the 26 letters of the alphabet (at least if we count after the English alphabet, probably would Sony not releasing an Xperia Ä in any case). With the launch of the latest in a series of alphabetical phone, Xperia Z, whispered Sony that there still was the last letter in the alphabet, so hopefully they are on the road with a little more logical naming scheme. It would have been logical if first alphabet letters belong to the financial sector and that it then went up, but last year’s Arc as all the between the models of the X-series are testimony to the contrary.

For this reason, it is also difficult to solely via the name place where Xperia J belongs somewhere. Specifications gossiped about mid-range, but it’s a difficult segment to predict the price for. When the price tag then appeared to land on 1 890 SEK became even more interesting from a financial perspective, at the same time is always the question of what is a stress on the foot or to be pared down to the phone would get the price tag.

Happily, are big parts of the build quality is surprisingly good and the weight feels well balanced in terms of the size of the handset. The shell itself is not quite as helpful as many other lurking in this price range, but the buttons for volume and power feels as if they are too long for them to feel really comfortable to use or even know if you actually got a hit is registered.

Among the positive features include screen, which has a few pixel higher resolution than many other lurking in this class. Just that bit is not really noticeable, but it’s mainly the color reproduction that is unusually good for a phone in this class. A disturbing detail, however, is that there is no light sensor that regulates the brightness automatically, something which otherwise would be able to save battery. The battery itself at 1 750 milliampere-hours need not be ashamed of themselves and the phone keeps relatively long on a single charge, but all that saves battery power is otherwise welcome.

When it comes to the finer specifications around the hardware takes the sorry end there. The rest is built around an extremely tight budget and surprisingly confused specifications. Storage space is at a mere four gigabytes, while quite a few phones in the same price range boasts the double. The same applies to the processor, which may settle for a single core instead of two and working memory that lands on 512 MB when it could have been higher a few hundred megabytes. Similar priced Xperia Sola from the same company can boast both the more processor cores and a modern processor, allowing the Xperia J in many cases seems like a pretty illogical choice for the budget conscious.

It strangled the hardware also allows the performance tests we drive through hardly impresses and unusually, begins some trialware moan about the phone has insufficient memory to be able to be tested in a good way. The same applies even during normal use of your phone, then it quite often stops in the use or to the keyboard cannot keep up in all key presses.

While the camera is on the negative side unfortunately. Photo lamp to help in darker environments at all and neither sharpness or color scheme feels really good, despite the fact that Sony has historically been relatively well at that point even in the lower price ranges.

When we tested the phone were Android 4.0 installed on it, but since then has Sony upgraded Android Xperia J 4.1, also known as Jelly Bean. The software is otherwise the same as most other phones from Sony and surprises not directly. The overhead shell adds some extra details and the old remnant Timescape pops up a little here and there even though it hardly adds much in a modern phone when it comes to collecting social media and notifications from contacts.

When it comes to the keyboard in portrait mode, it feels like something has become felkalibrerat from the factory. Pressing straight on a letter often leads to screen sign the letter to the left instead, so to meet the right, we must instead aim slightly diagonally to the right. Fortunately, you do not experience the same problems when the phone is in landscape mode, probably because the buttons are large enough.

On the whole, performs Xperia J reasonably seen to price class, but it feels slightly expensive for anyone looking for a really cheap but still relatively good mobile and for one or two hundred pieces, you can take a large step up in most areas and get a phone that, in General, become a better user experience.

On the other hand: Erik M

I think a lot of it positive, well-organized in the more expensive Sony models have made their way down even in Xperia j. Good thing also with sms-counter for kostnadskoll.
