Test: Acer Iconia B1

Acer has patched together a great budget flat, where size is unfortunately something tight.

Tablets of the class around seven inches is a pretty obvious use. They are there for those who want a device with a larger screen area than a mobile phone, but want a device that is easier to both hold and take with them than a tiotumsplatta. A tablet on the seven inch is usually with a little good will go to press in the larger jack pockets and the like, which removes the need for a separate bag.

So far, all with on the track, but Acer. The above line of thought seems to have been at all when Iconia b1 was created. The plate has a solid frame around the screen, making the whole unit is huge in the context and quite uncomfortable to grip with one hand. A thickness of 11.3 mm may not sound much, but very many competitors is currently around seven millimeters. This means that the plate is not only large but also substantially thick. Combined with a relatively low weight and size a very hollow feeling in plastic shells do not direct the wonders of how we experience the build quality.

Battery strong

Much of the above can of course be attributed to the price tag on really low 1 400 SEK. But when all competitors, regardless of price range, is considerably smaller, it feels simply not very fun.

A huge advantage of the size, however, is that Acer seems to have used it to poke into a slightly larger battery of Iconia b1 than what competitors can fit. By plain use it does not feel as if the plate battery gauge moves at all, and when we expose it for our battery test can it with nearly eleven hours before giving up. Most tablets usually land around eight or nine hours in the test, so the size is not entirely wasted. Acer has also poked a mini-hdmi port if you want to get up the plate material to a tv, which feels nice in the expectation that wireless companies will have a greater foothold.

The screen may be said to be completely okay in terms of the price tag, at least when we’re talking colors and contrast. The win hardly any prices, but it will do. However, what is rather dreary is the angle of view, blurring the picture very quickly as soon as you start to tilt the plate. Friend of order and pixels can also be somewhat disappointed by the resolution, which is located on the quite low 1024 x 600 while most others took up to at least 1280 x 800. Peksensorn belong to may not be the famous we found on a touch screen but it’s rarely that blunt that we disturb us on it during use, something that might otherwise be quite common when we look at cheaper devices that are saved into the right touch technology to cut the price tag.

On the inside we find a rather low clocked systemchip from mtk of budget model. That combined with only 512 MB RAM means that we cannot directly see any wonders in performance tests. Low amount of RAM means that it begins to go slow pretty fast when you have multiple apps running. Run you just any single app floating it on okay, but you will hardly use the plate for some heavier games or similar.

Private cloud

Speaking of apps and games, there is no shortage of such on the preinstalled front. It’s not quite as many pre-installed gadgets that Asus wont push in their plates, but very close. It is also clear that it is very much about licensed bloat ware, with several different portals to download games and apps. To sum up, do your apps, and of course Android installation itself, you have just over 11 gigabytes of free of the sixteen as the specification says. Of course, it is sufficient for the part, but because you cannot uninstall Acer apps becomes the most that they are and take up unnecessary space.

One of the apps is Acer’s cloud service Acercloud which works a little different from other cloud services. To get started on the pad provides some headache, with a buggy main app and the requirement that you must download five separate applications in order to use the service in full. The service then works with Android, ios devices and computers (Windows only) and is meant to replace the wired synchronization of files between the plate and the computer. Because it is very much about direct communication between the plate and the computer is never really talk about storing things on any Acer-server, but all goes directly to your computer. The service works, after the annoying installation piece, okay and pretty quickly.

Iconia b1 is also available in the 3 g version for almost a thousand extra. Is it 3 g you’re looking at a tablet will make you probably better in to take a closer look at the Asus Fonepad, which retails for about the same price but works much rapper (and smaller). We’re talking budget tiles using only Wi-Fi can be a decent choice if b1, you really have a tight budget, there are far worse plates than Iconia b1. At the same time you can find for example a Asus Memo Pad hd 7 for a couple hundred more, something that brings with it a much easier format and a hefty increase in the user experience and the flow in the system. It is the enormous size that is Iconia b1 to load, but at the same time, the segment of sjutumsplattor has increased tremendously in the past year. It allows a very low price tag need not necessarily be the Prime a manufacturer should invest in.
