Huawei Ascend W1-Good Windows Phone to Sharp Price (Mobile Test)

Test: the first Windows Phone from Huawei has just been under scrutiny. Read test and our assessment of Ascend W1.

Back in June 2012, where Microsoft unveiled Windows Phone 8, was the HTC, Huawei, Nokia and Samsung said that producers there would help to make Windows Phone 8 a success. But until now, there has been quiet on Windows Phone-front from China’s Huawei.

Now is the first smartphone ready from the Chinese with operating system Windows Phone 8 ready – the name is Ascend W1. During CES in Las Vegas in January was the officially presented – and has also showcased at Mobile World Congress 2013.

Competition on Windows Phone 8 market seems not so aggressive – several producers have made their bids on a Windows Phone 8-Mobile, but there is no doubt that it is Nokia who sits on the throne. Despite the world’s largest mobile manufacturer Samsung also have come with their bids, so is the flagship Windows Phone 8 platform continue to Nokia Lumia 920.

Nokia is also the only manufacturer which has own applications with in the form of, among other things, Nokia Music, Nokia transport and Nokia Drive – but have we not need these, then there are other alternatives out there on Windows Phone 8 platform.

We have had the Huawei Ascend W1 scrutinised and tested away at it in the last week or so. You can including reading how it performs in the test.

Map of Huawei Ascend W1

Huawei Ascend W1 comes with a 4 inch screen (480 x 800 pixels) and a weight of 130 grams. The size of the phone fits very well for my hands, but it is of course a matter of taste – and also varies according to the size of one’s hands.

It comes with a 1.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon S 4 dual-core processor, 512 MB RAM and 4 GB of internal memory, but it has the option of extension via a microSD card.

Ascend W1 has a 5 megapixels camera with LED flash, while the front camera is in VGA quality.

For comparison, Huawei Ascend W1 a bit larger physically than the iPhone 5, but the form factor is roughly the same.

Just like HTC and Nokia, so is also ready in a select Ascend W1 of colors. It comes in colors black, white, blue and red – but in Denmark it will immediately “only” in the colors black and blue.

Design – approved

During the testing period, I am several times been met with that people thought it was a Nokia phone. I would say it must be a quality stamp to the design. Nokia has generally garnered praise for their design.

But when you saw the first time takes Huawei Ascend W1 in hand one can notice that the materials are plastic and the choice of materials is not a worthy top model, but when you then hear price of the phone, so you do not feel it should be SO cheap.

The system is running as it should

Windows Phone is a highly stable operating system, which in the latest version 8 only have small bugs, and that just works and can excite a, even when you are dealing with a telephone to below 2,000 dollars without subscription to do.

The biggest problem for Windows Phone 8-platform is still that there is not yet quite the same application selection, as for Android and iOS. But, for example, with the new “112 app” so that it came to all three systems simultaneously, so it goes in the right direction.

Facebook, which is an application many uses, is still, unfortunately, not good enough. But you get used to many things – especially because the system works well and stable in General.

In the past, has also been a great games in short supply for Windows Phone 8 phones but here is also beginning to happen something. The popular game Ruzzle and Temple Run has found its way to Windows Phone Large.

Exclusive applications – is missing, but it works anyway

Windows Phone platform is more “identical” from producer to producer than, for example, Android. That is why manufacturers must stand out on exclusive applications if they are to provide users with an extra sense of belonging to their models – that is what Nokia has done.

But both Huawei and Samsung have chosen to have the standard version of Windows Phone 8. There had been talk that Ascend W1 was a top model, so had it probably annoyed more, that there is no navigation service or other exclusive applications. But when there is talk about a phone to below 2,000 dollars without subscription, so I certainly do not feel it is a must. The users who want it can in such cases victims a little extra on a Windows Phone application Store.

The target audience for the Huawei Ascend W1 is, in my opinion, people who do not want to pay a lot for their mobile phone, but still would like to have one that works. Previously Android phones in the price class under 2,000 crowns been forever reviled for having bad monitors, and a system who stutters. This is not the case in the same way on Windows Phone 8 platform.

Long battery life

Despite the fact that the price given is kept at the low end on the Huawei Ascend W1, so is the battery in the phone is certainly a top model worthy. Battery is at 1,950 mAh, which is only 50 mAh less than who sits in the flagship, Nokia Lumia 920. And then using the Huawei’s own unique “Power Saving Technology”.

With the large battery, it also means that there is plenty of power for at least one full day, where everything from Wi-Fi, push mail, Facebook, etc. is set to, and who both sent text messages, emails, calls, take pictures and surfing the Internet.

During the testing period, I have had the battery enough for about two days of use, where it has been used fully. So the battery is impressive in General. Previously, Huawei also impressed with their battery on, among other things. Huawei Honor.

Huawei believes itself, the battery can last 3 days for “light users” and 1 ½ days for “heavy users”.

Messages and keyboard

Messages written on the on-screen keyboard, just like on other Windows Phones, and here there can be no complaints. The keyboard is working and it is done without great problems.

The write speed can be quick, if you choose to make use of the predictive text the phone comes with. In line with know you better and better, so can the almost “guessing” what your next word is.

There is not anything in Windows Phone T9 keyboard, but a QWERTY-keyboard-and the possibility of smileys takes place quickly and easily via your keyboard.

The Internet

Once you have become accustomed to how the browser looks on a Windows Phone, so Internet works as it should.

All Windows Phones are designed with a dedicated search button at the bottom right of the phone – this is also the case on Huawei Ascend W1. When you press the “magnifying glass” so you come immediately to Microsoft’s competitor to Google as the search engine Bing – here there may then search for Web pages, images and local interests in the vicinity.

The browser is Internet Explorer – and you can also create “bookmarks”, which comes out on the front page as a small “tiles” – this is done by selecting “PIN to start”.

Camera

Huawei Ascend W1 is coming, as mentioned earlier, with a 5 megapixel camera. And the pictures we have taken with the phone is certainly qualified and reputable.

You can also take pictures in two different ways on Ascend W1 – for both by using the physical camera key or by clicking on the screen where you want the focus. You can also use the physical camera key as a shortcut to the camera, this is done by holding the key down for a few seconds.

When you again keeps the result up against the phone’s price, so I am personally very pleasantly surprised. And for the audience there is for Ascend W1, so should the camera certainly live up to expectations.

You can view pictures taken with Ascend W1 in the gallery below.

Conclusion – good Windows Phone to sharp price

Huawei Ascend W1 is a really good bet for a smartphone on the Windows Phone platform at a price that really gives the “value for money”.

You get with Ascend W1 is not a smartphone, which is a top model, but the price is in turn also so sharp that you delete are not getting the thoughts. Ascend W1 has a suggested retail price of 1,599 dollars without subscription, but already now you can find it by some traders on our site to 1,499 dollars without subscription. So is there really much phone for the money.

The phone has during the entire test period worked well and stable – and has a battery that is approved for full marks.

My personal guess would be that those who are in the segment of Ascend W1 is callers, sends SMS-/MMS-beskeder, check mail, surf a bit and takes pictures – and to the things that are certainly a good phone W1 Ascend.

Huawei Ascend W1 ends on 5 out of 6 stars, because you really get value for money – Ascend W1 is a phone that is really good for the price. The grade is certainly within reach, and it had been home if we had felt we got something “extra” if necessary. in the form of special applications.
